Sad News

All of you bloggers you will know that Hooch has been a part of this and the BBC blogs since it started way back when. Unfortunately we had to take him to the vets on Thursday and it was decided that there was nothing we could do for him.
He has been with us for over 6 years and having being a rescue dog I am sure that he has enjoyed his time with us as much as we have with him.
He was a characture and my everlasting memories of him will be when he was at his happiest neck deep in the ocean cooling off.
Although I am very sad that he has gone, I am glad that I was able to share some time with him.

*Furryhugs* to all at Barebraes. Surely no dog ever had such an expurressive face as Hooch. Those pussycats won’t know who to pick on/snuggle up to/torment - delete where inapplicable.
Me’n'Marmers feel we’ve lost a virtual sparring partner.

Oh, sad news indeed, Barebraes. I loved the photo you took last summer of Hooch having a good ol’ sniff at my teacosy… I’m so sorry.

Thankyou for all your kind words. I am sure he is happy now. And the chickens can have a rest from him running after them in the morn

Just looked at your blog - the first time in maybe a year or more! So sorry to hear that the big fella has passed on. He will have had the best life anyone could have given him, considering his origins - so be proud of the life you gave him. I bet he’ll be missed by the cats and chickens too - such a big part of their day to day reality. I reckon Dean will be quite upset by the news. Take care.

Oh Barebraes, I only just read this (Monday morning). I am so, so sorry. Hooch was lovely. He had a wonderful life with you (and the chickens!) and your memories of him will be very good ones. A virtual {{{{{hug}}}}} to you all.

I am very sorry to hear the very sad news about Hooch. As a volunteer at Danaher I always walked Hooch whenever possible as it was such a joy to be with such a gentle giant. All the staff and volunteers who remember him will be very sorry to hear the news.
Hooch came to the Centre because his owner was expecting her fourth baby and didn’t think she couldn’t manage four children and Hooch. At first I wondered how she managed with three children and Hooch but when you got to know him I think he would have made a very good Nanny like Nanna in Peter Pan.
Looking on the positive side, we know Hooch had a wonderfull life on Shapinsay and that’s the important thing to focus on. Hooch it was a privilege to have known you.

It was so nice to hear from someone at the centre where Hooch came from, It made me remember the fun times we all had mucking out the kennels and walking the dogs , the day I was walking a large alsatian and her collar broke and she ran luckily straight towards John who caught her for me. The time that my first walk with Hooch when he spotted the play field and pulled me over and dragged me through the mud until he reached the gate, explaining to Layla and Jen what he had done was funny too. There are so many memories to keep from Paul and my time there, and would like to let you know what a wonderful job you all do. I hope that you are still getting donations for the place, I hear you have a new kennel block since we were there. Well Done

Yes, the Centre has grown - three new kennel blocks. 24 Homing, 32 Assessment, and 8 Isolation kennels. Thank goodness there are still people like you willing to take on a rescue dogs.
My wife and I are currently fostering an elderly little dog found dumped in a local high street. She only has one eye with very little vision, profoundly deaf and not many teeth. What makes her special is her courage because despite her disabilities she is a happy, trusting little soul.
Thank you for including the Danaher website. Who knows one of your readers may know of someone down South looking for a four legged orphan.
Best wishes.

I thought it was you John
If it wasn’t for you we wouldn’t have ended up in Orkney so glad that you have found a special little dog to look after. I have taken a look at the site and seen at least 10 dogs I would love to look after. We send our regards to you and your good wife. Keep up the good work and remember us to any of the girls and lads still there

I wonder if May (the little dog we are fostering) was among the ten you would like to adopt. She is on the website and very appealing.
We have been following your blogs and appreciate how well you have integrated into island life and hope you continue to enjoy the quality of life it provides. We can’t imagine you are missing anything from this part of the world.
We will certainly remember you to all the folks at the Centre.
